Halo MK1 Limited Edition is the latest innovation to emerge from the powerful partnership between Jack Daniel’s and the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1® Team, now in its fourth year. This bold secondary pack, brought to life by Hunter Luxury, celebrates the synergy of two iconic brands and launched in dramatic fashion at one of motorsport’s most electric venues.
More than packaging, Halo is a statement; one that fuses cutting-edge design, precision engineering, and high-performance materials to honour Formula 1’s most important safety innovation: the Halo device. Much like its namesake, the case wraps protectively around its contents, balancing visual spectacle with mechanical sophistication in a piece that both protects and presents.
The Halo cockpit device has improved safety standards across the sport since its introduction in 2018 and is an unmistakable part of modern F1 car design. With this wishbone silhouette as inspiration, the Halo MK1 display case mirrors that purpose and poise, not merely containing the bottle but releasing it with intention.
This is packaging elevated to engineering: a structure born from vision, realised through innovation and brought to life through an intense prototyping process led by the design experts at Hunter Luxury.
It began with a bold concept from the Brown-Forman team – a striking, wishbone-style presentation case envisioned in 2D, but ready to leap into three dimensions. Working closely with their creative team, Hunter Luxury translated flat designs into a fully engineered structure through CAD modelling, rapid prototyping and iterative testing.
From the outset, this was never going to be a standard brief. The design demanded both theatre and tactility, a premium look and feel that could live up to the Jack Daniel’s and McLaren brands, without compromising on manufacturability.
At the heart of the experience is a bespoke push-button mechanism, cleverly concealed beneath the McLaren logo. A subtle press activates the hidden release, freeing the bottle from its sculpted cradle with smooth, deliberate motion and engineered to echo the precision and drama of motorsport. It’s a moment of mechanical theatre, built to surprise and delight. Even the button click was engineered, upgraded with EVA elements to create a soft, premium sound that contrasts with the hollow plastic ring of early prototypes.
Behind this seemingly simple interaction lies a complex design challenge: crafting a final pack that conceals every mechanical component within a clean, trophy-like silhouette. From the weighted feel to acoustic dampening, every detail was obsessively refined through more than 20 CAD iterations and multiple physical prototypes, including FDM, SLA, and CNC-machined aluminium, before arriving at its finished form.
The final structure comprises 50+ components, engineered from eight different materials and manufactured using eight distinct processes. A combination of die-cast and extruded aluminium delivers the rigidity and sophistication of automotive-grade parts, while the Alcantara-lined base nods to McLaren interiors.
Carbon fibre styling was achieved by replicating a McLaren-supplied swatch visually, applied graphically to moulded components to stay within commercial parameters while maintaining aesthetic authenticity.
A satin mould finish across the case’s signature McLaren Papaya surface, recreating McLaren’s iconic vivid orange hue flawlessly, ensures a sleek, matte appearance, avoiding plastic sheen and matching the refined detailing of the cars it celebrates.
Halo MK1 was brought to life in record time. From first briefing to prototype approval in just seven months, and from concept sign-off to launch in only ten. In total, the project produced 20 digital prototypes and 4 physical iterations, balancing speed with perfection to meet its launch deadline.
With production volumes in the tens of thousands, meticulous supply chain coordination was essential. Multiple factories managed part manufacture and final assembly, ensuring each unit met the highest quality standards expected by both brands.
While performance was the priority, sustainability was not overlooked. The aluminium used is of a recyclable grade, and unused components from finishing processes were collected and re-smelted – a small but significant step toward circular manufacturing in premium packaging.
In Formula 1, championships are won and lost by thousandths of a second – a sport where precision, performance, and aesthetics cannot be compromised. The Halo display case reflects that same uncompromising spirit. Its black exterior, finished through an advanced electrophoresis process, achieves a uniform, matte texture across the aluminium surface. This technique not only enhances durability and consistency but also delivers a refined, understated look that echoes the flawless finishes demanded in race car engineering.
This project is not defined by a single moment of impact, but by a sustained sense of presence. It is conceived as an object to be lived with over time, remembered and valued, and ultimately displayed with the same reverence as a trophy.
